Why aren't PNG screenshots supported?

What is the rationale for only supporting JPEG screenshots when the Android SDK generates PNG screenshots?

PNG's & JPEG's

For images uploaded by developers such as screenshots and promotional images we achieve better compression on our end for storage. Also such screenshots and promotional images should not need transparency. For icons, PNG support is required for transparency.
