I'm using this on a Kindle Fire second generation (uses a variant of Android 4.0 ICS).

Anyway, it works great so far. Chimes sound when it's off (not shut down) and on. Program stays open even without a status bar entry.

Anyway, there's an hourly chime on the Amazon app store, but it didn't work as well or as reliably, and this one has a lot more features.

I highly recommend it.

It doesn't come with its own chimes, but it does let you use your built-in ringtones and notifications, which is nice.
