The story starts with a poor magical lady being locked in a room of straw which she must turn into gold. She is joined by a funny little man called Rumpelstiltskin who offers to spin the straw for her. But she was made to promise Rumpelstiltskin that should she ever become Queen, she would have to hand over her first-born child to him.
The King was so happy with the lady, that he married her. The King and Queen soon had a baby, but Rumpelstiltskin turned up demanding the baby he was promised. He gave the Queen just three days to guess his name or he would take the baby.
Rumpelstiltskin was overheard saying his name and the Queen was told. She repeated the name to Rumpelstiltskin and got to keep her baby and live happily ever after.
